Slayyyter addresses resurfaced racial slurs amid backlash

Slayyyter has addressed backlash after past comments of hers containing racial slurs resurfaced.

The posts first came to light back in 2020 and in January that year Slayyyter, real name Catherine Garner, apologised for the language used in the updates. She also said that she took “full accountability” for them.

She also added that she is “not racist” and “made mistakes during my adolescent years, but I have made active strides to do better since then”, and also vowed to donate a portion of the money from her vinyl and CD sales to charities supporting the Black LGBTQ+ community.

She later added: “This newfound attention is cool and all, but it’s unsettling about having people try to find things to ruin me with. Why do you want to see me fail so bad?”.

The response has divided fans online, with some arguing that she has not fully taken accountability for the past comments, while others have defended her as already apologising and showing regret.

Others, however were more sympathetic, with one writing: “She’s genuinely evolved as a person and addressed this so many times, and even before they surfaced the first time”, and someone else adding “If we don’t allow anyone to grow and get better, then there is no hope for our future”.

The singer-songwriter went on to confirm that she and her team were currently looking at rescheduling the impacted dates for next year, adding: “I hope to have news to share very soon to make it up to you.”.
